Mon May 12 17:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Minor iOS Update Brings Big Satellite Feature to iPhone 13
**CUPERTINO, CA —** Apple released iOS 18.5 today, a relatively minor update bringing several quality-of-life improvements and one significant new feature: carrier-provided satellite connectivity for iPhone 13 models. While the update includes new Pride-themed wallpaper, enhanced Screen Time parental controls (with password bypass notifications), and improved Apple TV app purchasing, the satellite feature is the headliner.
Previously limited to iPhone 14 and later models, the satellite connectivity allows users to send text messages, share their location, and request emergency services even without cellular or Wi-Fi access. This functionality relies on carrier partnerships, such as T-Mobile’s collaboration with Starlink and Verizon’s work with AST SpaceMobile, using “Direct to Cell” technology. While currently focused on text messaging, future expansions to include voice and data are anticipated.
iOS 18.5 also subtly refines the redesigned Mail app introduced in iOS 18.2. User feedback prompted Apple to make the “All Mail” category always visible and add an option to hide contact icons, giving users more control over the app’s appearance. The update also addresses a black screen bug in the Apple Vision Pro app.
The update is available now through Settings > General > Software Update. Whether or not the carrier-provided satellite feature is available depends on user’s carrier support. A “SAT” symbol in the status bar indicates an active satellite connection.
