Sat May 10 08:59:57 UTC 2025: **India Shoots Down Pakistani Kamikaze Drones in Punjab**
NEW DELHI, May 10, 2025 – Indian Air Defence (AAD) forces successfully intercepted and shot down several Pakistani Byker YIHA III kamikaze drones in the early hours of Saturday morning near Amritsar, Punjab. The drones, launched from Pakistan across the International Border, were carrying high-explosive payloads and aimed at densely populated civilian areas, according to official sources.
The attack, described as a “new low” by Indian officials, is the latest in a series of cross-border incursions. Wg Cdr Vyomika Singh stated that Pakistan employed various weapons systems, including UCAVs, drones, and fighter jets, targeting civilian areas and military infrastructure at over 26 locations along the Western borders on the nights of May 9th and 10th. A similar incident occurred on the night of May 8th, with approximately 300-400 drones launched from Leh to Sir Creek. These drones were initially assessed to be Turkish-origin Asisguard Songar armed drones.
The AAD’s swift response prevented casualties and damage to civilian property. Sources praised the effectiveness of India’s layered air-defence system, which includes ground-based radars, electro-optical sensors, and automated command and control systems. The Indian Air Force holds overall responsibility for the nation’s air defence, utilizing a three-tiered system of gun/missile systems, medium-range, and high-range defenses. The indigenous Akash Surface-to-Air Missile system was deployed in recent operations. Pictures of the recovered kamikaze drones have been released. The incident is being investigated as part of Operation Sindoor.
