**CHENNAI, INDIA – May 8, 2025** – India is grappling with a staggering number of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), according to a new report. With an estimated 212 million cases of diabetes in 2022, India carries the world’s highest burden of this disease alone. The World Health Organization estimates an additional 77 million adults in India have type 2 diabetes, and nearly 25 million are prediabetic.
This alarming situation highlights a broader NCD crisis encompassing hypertension, stroke, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic lung disease. The surge in NCDs is attributed to shifting lifestyles, environmental factors, and genetics.
To address this public health emergency, The Hindu Huddle will host a session titled “Non-communicable diseases: Trojan horse of India’s health” in Bengaluru on May 9 and 10. The panel will feature leading experts including Preetha Reddy (Apollo Hospitals), Anoop Mishra (Fortis C-DOC Hospital), and Chandrakanth Lahariya (health policy advisor). The discussion will explore strategies for both treatment and prevention, focusing on improving access to affordable healthcare. The session will be moderated by Ramya Kannan, Health Editor at The Hindu. Members of the public are encouraged to submit questions to huddle@thehindu.co.in.
