Mon May 05 20:36:06 UTC 2025: ## India Condemns Anti-Modi Rally in Toronto, Rebukes Canada

**NEW DELHI, May 6, 2025** – India lodged a strong protest with Canada on Monday over a pro-Khalistan rally in Toronto that featured derogatory depictions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian officials. The demonstration, which included slogans such as “Kill India,” also targeted Indian citizens residing in Canada.

An official source stated that India conveyed its “strongest concerns” to the Canadian High Commission, demanding action against those responsible for spreading hatred and promoting extremism and separatist agendas. This follows a week after the election of Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, whom Modi congratulated in a message emphasizing the shared democratic values between the two nations.

The incident further strains already tense relations between India and Canada, which soured significantly in September 2023 following accusations by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Indian agents were involved in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan leader. India has repeatedly voiced its displeasure over growing pro-Khalistan activities in Canada, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar previously criticizing the Trudeau government for engaging in “vote bank” politics. In October 2024, India withdrew its High Commissioner from Ottawa. While Canada has denied any links between the Nijjar killing and Indian officials, the latest rally adds another layer of complexity to the strained bilateral relationship.
