Mon May 05 13:17:43 UTC 2025: ## Germany Defends AfD Surveillance Amidst US and Russian Criticism

**BERLIN** – Germany is defending its decision to designate the Alternative for Germany (AfD), the country’s largest opposition party, as an extremist organization, sparking a heated international debate. The move allows Germany’s domestic intelligence agency to surveil the party, prompting a lawsuit from the AfD itself.

The AfD, which came second in recent elections, filed a lawsuit and emergency petition with the Cologne administrative court challenging the classification. Party leaders condemned the move as an abuse of power aimed at silencing opposition and delegitimizing millions of voters. An 1100-page report by the intelligence agency, which remains confidential, reportedly concludes the AfD is racist and anti-Muslim.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from the United States, with Vice President JD Vance calling the AfD the most representative party in eastern Germany and Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeling the designation “tyranny in disguise.” The German foreign ministry responded firmly, stating that the decision was the result of a thorough investigation to protect the constitution and rule of law, and emphasized that independent courts will have the final say. The ministry added, “We have learned from our history that right-wing extremism needs to be stopped.”

Russia also criticized the move, aligning with the AfD’s frequent repetition of Kremlin narratives on the war in Ukraine. The German government’s actions are seen as a response to the continued rise of the far-right, a concern shared by the newly formed coalition government of the CDU and SPD. While the coalition will review the situation, the incident highlights the complexities of balancing democratic freedoms with the need to counter extremism. The Cologne court will now begin reviewing the AfD’s legal challenge.
