Mon May 05 19:11:02 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Industrial Area Pollutes Air and Water, Finds Study

**KOCHI, Kerala – May 6, 2025** – A study by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has revealed dangerously high levels of air and noise pollution, and contaminated water in the Ayyankuzhi ward near Kochi’s Ambalamugal industrial area. The research, conducted between December 4, 2024, and January 3, 2025, at the behest of the Kerala High Court, found that PM2.5 levels exceeded permissible limits on 15 out of 30 monitored days. While other air quality parameters like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide were within acceptable ranges, noise levels consistently surpassed permitted limits, both day and night. Furthermore, well water in the area failed to meet potable water standards according to IS 10500: 2012.

The KSPCB filed a report detailing these findings with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on April 29, 2025. The report highlights concerns raised by local residents about the impact of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited Kochi Refinery and Hindustan Organic Chemicals Ltd. operations. The KSPCB has stated it will take further action to address these issues.
