**PATNA, Bihar—**The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is throwing its weight behind the Mahagathbandhan, a coalition of opposition parties, in their efforts to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby, during his first visit to Bihar since his election, announced a plan to strategize for the coalition’s victory.

Baby, who met with party leaders in Madhubani on May 6th, emphasized the importance of the upcoming Bihar elections as a crucial test of the party’s nationwide goal to defeat the BJP. He praised the Mahagathbandhan’s commitment to the May 20th nationwide strike against the Modi government’s policies.

The CPI(M), which won two out of four contested seats in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, is actively supporting the Mahagathbandhan’s efforts. This support is echoed by other Left parties; the CPI(M-L), a key component of the Mahagathbandhan, has also pledged support for the nationwide strike, viewing it as a display of unity ahead of the elections. In the 2020 elections, Left parties collectively won 16 out of 29 contested seats.

The Mahagathbandhan is gearing up for a concerted effort to unseat the BJP in the October-November elections. The upcoming nationwide strike serves as a significant demonstration of the opposition’s collective strength and resolve.
