**Indianapolis, IN** – A recall has been issued for 4-count vine-ripe tomatoes sold in plastic clamshell containers due to potential Salmonella contamination. Ray & Mascari Inc., based in Indianapolis, is voluntarily recalling the product after being notified by its supplier, Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida.
The recalled tomatoes were distributed by Gordon Food Service Stores across eleven states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The affected product is identified by the label “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” and “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204,” with Lot# RM250424 15250B or Lot# RM250427 15250B on the master case. The master case is a cardboard produce box containing twelve 4-count containers.
While no illnesses have been reported, Salmonella can cause serious, even fatal, infections, particularly in vulnerable populations. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Consumers who purchased the recalled tomatoes are urged to discard them immediately and not consume them. Questions or reports of illness should be directed to Ray & Mascari Inc. during regular business hours. The FDA website provides further details on the recall. This recall comes amidst other recent food-related recalls, including one for apple juice and a major recall of pressure cookers. A separate segment on a Fox News show also discussed the planned phasing out of artificial food dyes.
