Mon May 05 13:35:05 UTC 2025: ## India Mulls Captaincy Change Ahead of Crucial England Test Series

**Mumbai, India** – With the Indian Premier League (IPL) nearing its end, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a leadership change for the upcoming five-match Test series against England in June. While current Test captain Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire to retain the role, sources suggest no assurances have been given. The series is seen by many as an opportunity to initiate a transition in Test cricket leadership.

Despite speculation surrounding his potential retirement following a disappointing tour of Australia, Sharma has yet to announce any decision regarding his future. However, the England series is being viewed by some as a potential swansong for the 38-year-old captain.

According to the Times of India, the BCCI is considering appointing Shubman Gill as vice-captain for the England tour, a move that would follow his recent appointment as deputy in T20Is and ODIs. However, a senior Indian cricketer has also reportedly expressed interest in the captaincy. The BCCI, selectors, and head coach Gautam Gambhir are reportedly prioritizing a long-term solution, rejecting the idea of interim appointments.

A source quoted in the Times of India emphasized the importance of a stable leadership for the new World Test Championship cycle, stating that “Future and continuity have to be kept in mind… There can’t be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series.”

Gill’s potential captaincy faces a challenge, however. Despite filling Cheteshwar Pujara’s shoes at the No. 3 batting position, his overall performance, particularly away from home, remains inconsistent. Only 649 of his 1893 Test runs have been scored outside India, raising concerns about his suitability for the leadership role, especially given the demanding nature of an away series against England. The upcoming England tour will therefore be a crucial test for Gill, both as a batsman and as a potential future leader of the Indian Test team.
