**Kozhikode, May 4, 2025** – A five-member expert team is investigating an incident at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala, where a minor explosion in a UPS room caused a fire and smoke on May 2nd. The incident forced the evacuation of 151 patients, with some transferred to other wards within the hospital, others to the Government General Hospital, and the remainder to private facilities.
The casualty section and MRI scanning unit remain closed, though services are expected to resume soon. Patients currently in private hospitals will be transferred back. A temporary casualty ward has been established in the hospital’s older building.
K.V. Viswanathan, director of Medical Education (in-charge), stated that repairs to damaged equipment are underway, following a meeting held at the hospital on Sunday. He confirmed that Health Minister Veena George ordered an immediate inquiry into the event, with the report expected to be submitted shortly.
