Mon May 05 10:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Weekend Rain Offers Some Relief to Drought-Stricken Central Florida

**Orlando, FL** – After one of the driest Aprils on record, bringing parched lawns and triggering burn bans across Central Florida, a much-needed reprieve is on the horizon. The National Weather Service predicts a chance of showers this weekend, offering hope to residents battling severe drought conditions.

Orlando experienced only 0.37 inches of rain in April, 2.21 inches below the average and making it the 12th driest April in 133 years. This lack of rainfall, combined with high temperatures and breezy conditions, led to burn bans being issued in Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index, a measure of soil dryness, currently shows alarmingly high readings in these counties.

The weekend forecast offers a glimmer of hope. The National Weather Service forecasts a 30% chance of showers on Saturday and a 60% chance Sunday afternoon through Monday evening, with some areas potentially receiving over half an inch of rain. This precipitation is linked to a storm system moving eastward across the southern US and into Florida. However, the meteorologist warns that rainfall will be spotty, and not everyone will experience the much-needed moisture.

While the weekend rain is welcome news, it won’t significantly alleviate the region’s drought. Orlando has received only slightly over 4 inches of rain this year, 6.11 inches below normal. The wet season isn’t expected to begin until May 27th. Temperatures are also expected to remain slightly above normal for the weekend. Despite the rain, the region is still facing severe drought conditions and the potential for wildfires.
