**SRINAGAR, May 5, 2025** – Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today criticized the ongoing security crackdown in Pahalgam following a recent terror attack. She expressed deep concern over the alleged indiscriminate detention and questioning of local civilians, including pony operators, shawl vendors, and tea sellers.
Mufti stated that while the community overwhelmingly condemned the attack, the current security response is unduly harsh and alienating. She described instances of civilians being detained for hours without food, only to be repeatedly summoned for further questioning without any clear accusations. She further alleged that some civilians who cooperated with investigations were later found dead, claiming one individual died after jumping into a stream during a search operation. She called for a transparent investigation into these deaths and immediate financial aid to the affected families.
With the Amarnath Yatra approaching, Mufti appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for financial assistance to support pony operators, whose livelihoods have been severely impacted by the instability and crackdown. She also urged the waiver of interest on loans for hoteliers and taxi operators in Pahalgam, highlighting the vital role of the tourism sector in the region’s economy. Mufti emphasized that the collective punishment of innocent civilians undermines democratic principles and sows resentment. She called for a balance between security and upholding the dignity of civilians.
