DETROIT – General Motors is recalling nearly 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential engine failure risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced. The recall affects certain 2021-2024 model year Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL vehicles equipped with 6.2-liter V8 gas engines.

The issue stems from potential manufacturing defects in the connecting rod and/or crankshaft, which could lead to engine damage and failure, increasing the risk of a crash. GM reports a dozen alleged crashes and an equal number of alleged injuries potentially related to the defect, though most injuries were reported as minor or non-physical.

GM stated that customer safety is their top priority and they are working to address the issue swiftly. Letters notifying owners will be sent on June 9th. Dealerships will inspect affected vehicles, repairing or replacing engines as necessary. Vehicles passing inspection will receive higher viscosity oil, a new oil fill cap, and a new oil filter. GM implemented manufacturing improvements to address the crankshaft and connecting rod issues around June 1, 2024.

This recall impacts approximately 721,000 vehicles globally. In the U.S., GM sold 2.7 million vehicles in 2024, a 4% increase from the previous year.
