Fri May 02 17:07:12 UTC 2025: ## Record Number of Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Hatchlings Released in Tamil Nadu

**Chennai, Tamil Nadu – May 3, 2025** – A record number of Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings have been released along the Tamil Nadu coast this year, marking a significant success for conservation efforts. Over 229,000 hatchlings have been returned to the sea, surpassing last year’s total by over 14,000. This positive trend follows a challenging start to the nesting season (December-May), during which hundreds of dead turtles were found washed ashore.

The successful release of over 37,000 hatchlings in Chennai alone is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Forest Department, Fisheries Department, and Indian Coast Guard. Cuddalore led the state in hatchling releases with over 81,000, followed by Mayiladuthurai with over 38,000.

Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Departments of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, attributed the rebound to collaborative conservation efforts and highlighted future strategies, including improved waste management, beach cleaning, and reduced beach lighting. A new mobile app for data collection will aid in tracking nest conditions and improving hatchery success rates. The formation of a marine protection force for the Chennai region also promises enhanced protection. Despite the success, Ms. Sahu emphasized the need for continued cooperation with local municipalities to further improve turtle habitats.
