**NEW DELHI** – The Indian government is sharply criticizing the BBC’s coverage of last week’s deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians. The government sent a formal letter to the head of BBC India operations, Jackie Martin, expressing strong objections to the network’s reporting.
The government’s complaint centers on a BBC article headlined “Pakistan suspends visas for Indians after deadly Kashmir attack on tourists.” Officials argue the headline is misleading and wrongly implies India is responsible for the attack. Further criticism targets the article’s use of the term “militants” instead of “terrorists” to describe the perpetrators.
In a related move, the Indian government has blocked 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, citing the spread of provocative and misleading content related to the attack. The ban affects prominent news outlets like Dawn, Samaa TV, ARY News, and Geo News, as well as channels belonging to several Pakistani journalists. Users attempting to access these channels receive a message stating the content is unavailable due to a government order related to national security or public order.
The government’s actions follow the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and an order for Pakistanis in India to leave the country, in response to alleged links between the Pahalgam attack and Pakistan. This escalation has led to Pakistan suspending all bilateral pacts with India, including the Simla Agreement, and increased tensions along the Line of Control.
