**New Delhi, April 28, 2025** – The Delhi High Court has remanded three CBI officials to the custody of their own agency, citing a significant corruption case that “shakes the edifice” of the investigative machinery. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna’s April 25th order highlights the alleged bribery scheme involving the officials, along with a Finance Ministry official, who allegedly demanded bribes to influence investigations and outcomes.
The case stems from a complaint filed in April 2024 alleging that the CBI officials demanded ₹50 lakh (approximately $61,000 USD) from the complainant to “settle” two cases against him, eventually lowering the demand to ₹35 lakh. A further allegation involves a Finance Ministry official demanding ₹50,000 to influence Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers. A sting operation resulted in one CBI official being caught accepting a ₹3.5 lakh bribe, with the ministry official allegedly receiving ₹50,000 via Google Pay.
The High Court overturned a lower court’s decision to deny CBI custody, granting a two-day remand. The court emphasized the need for custodial interrogation to uncover a suspected larger conspiracy involving officials across multiple departments. The CBI had argued that a thorough investigation was crucial to prevent far-reaching consequences. The court agreed, stating that the investigation was in its infancy and that the interrogation of the accused was imperative to unearth the full extent of the conspiracy. The case underscores concerns about widespread corruption within government investigative agencies.
