**Bengaluru, Karnataka, April 27, 2025** – The long-awaited elections for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) are unlikely to take place anytime soon, despite the Governor’s recent assent to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024. According to Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy, the processes mandated by the new legislation, including redrawing corporation boundaries and ward delimitation, will take at least six months to complete. This suggests elections may not be held until the end of 2025 at the earliest.
Former BBMP councillors from across the political spectrum allege that the new Act provides a convenient excuse for MLAs to delay the polls, fearing a loss of influence over the civic body. They claim that the processes outlined in the Act, while requiring completion within four months according to its provisions, are likely to be stretched out significantly longer.
Despite upcoming all-party meetings to discuss the implementation of the GBGA, former councillors, even those from the ruling Congress party, express skepticism, suggesting these meetings are merely for show. They maintain that unless court intervention forces action, the delay will continue. The alleged lack of interest in holding elections stems from both Congress and BJP MLAs preferring the current administrative rule, which allows for greater interference in civic matters.
While some welcome the Governor’s assent to the Bill, the consensus points towards a considerable delay before Bengaluru citizens can elect their representatives to the BBMP.
