**CHENNAI, April 24, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government will construct a new sewage treatment plant (STP) in Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore district, to address concerns about wastewater discharge into a local stream, Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru announced today.
The announcement follows a calling attention motion raised by Kavundampalayam MLA P.R.G. Arunkumar, highlighting the issue of sewage contamination in the stream. Minister Nehru stated that the government is actively seeking a suitable location for the STP, even considering purchasing private land outside residential areas if necessary.
The town panchayat of Periyanaickenpalayam, with a population exceeding 32,000, currently has a 50 KLD fecal sludge treatment plant in operation. While commercial and industrial units reportedly have their own sewage treatment mechanisms, the lack of a larger STP has led to delays in preventing wastewater from entering the stream. The new STP is intended to remedy this situation.
