Bengaluru, Karnataka – April 24, 2025 – The Governor of Karnataka, Thaawarchand Gehlot, has approved the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2025, paving the way for the creation of up to seven new city corporations within the greater Bengaluru area. The decision follows a period of uncertainty after the Governor initially returned the Bill for clarification, prompting concerns from civic activists who argued it violated the 74th Constitutional Amendment.
The new legislation establishes the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to oversee the development of the region and empowers ward committees to enhance community participation in governance. The Act aims to improve the quality of life for Bengaluru residents through a more decentralized and efficient governance structure. However, actor and activist Prakash Belvawadi indicated that civic groups plan to explore further legal action, suggesting the fight over the bill’s constitutionality is not over.
In a separate development, the Governor also approved the Universities of Agricultural Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2025, leading to the establishment of a new agricultural university in Mandya. This new university will serve the districts of Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu.
