**Buenos Aires, Argentina** – Pope Francis, despite extensive international travel during his papacy, has never returned to his native Argentina since his ascension in 2013. This unprecedented absence has sparked debate and regret among Argentines.
While the Pope has undertaken over 45 international trips, including visits to Iraq, the UAE, and Mongolia, his homeland remains unvisited. Experts suggest this is due to Argentina’s politically polarized environment, fearing a papal visit could be exploited by either the left-leaning Peronists or conservatives. Former papal spokesman Guillermo Marco described the lack of a visit as a “wasted opportunity,” noting the Pope’s deep connection to Argentina.
Although Pope Francis expressed his desire to visit, citing “various matters” requiring resolution, Argentina has experienced repeated economic crises and political instability during his papacy. The current president, Javier Milei, despite initially criticizing the Pope, has since softened his stance.
While some believe the Pope should have visited regardless of the political climate, others, including former Vatican ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, point to Francis’ focus on promoting inclusivity within the Church and reaching out to regions with less established Catholic presence as a higher priority. Regardless, many Argentines express a longing to welcome their native son home.
