Mon Apr 21 09:01:19 UTC 2025: ## Mangalore’s Mahakalipadpu Twin Railway Underbridges Nearing Completion

**Mangalore, April 21, 2025** – The Southern Railway’s Palakkad division has completed a major milestone in the construction of twin railway underbridges (RuBs) in Mangalore. The final concrete box for the Mahakalipadpu project was successfully installed on April 17th, marking the culmination of a complex engineering feat. The project, which involved pushing massive concrete boxes beneath active railway lines, has been lauded as extraordinary due to its scale and complexity.

The installation of the boxes, each measuring 9 meters long, 7 meters high, and 10 meters wide, was followed by the removal of supporting girders. According to Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi, the remaining ancillary work, including storm water drainage and road leveling, is expected to be completed within two weeks. The Mangaluru City Corporation will then restore the service roads, while Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) will finalize the approach roads within a month.

The ₹50 crore project, initiated in December 2021 with funding from MSCL and MPLAD funds, aims to improve traffic flow between the Central Business District and National Highway 66. The underbridges are expected to significantly ease congestion, particularly for vehicles heading towards Thokkottu, Ullal, Talapady, and Kasargod. The project, which temporarily restricted vehicular traffic (excluding two-wheelers) since December 2022, is finally nearing completion, ending months of delays and inconvenience for road users. The DRM highlighted the project’s challenging nature, emphasizing the rarity of constructing RuBs of this magnitude between active railway lines.
