**COIMBATORE, April 21, 2025** – A joint operation by Coimbatore District (Rural) Police and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has resulted in the closure of 22 shops selling banned tobacco products. The crackdown, launched on April 19th following reports of illegal tobacco sales, involved 59 special police teams inspecting 306 shops.
Nineteen cases were filed against shop owners, and 46 kg of contraband tobacco was seized. The police are continuing preventative measures, including monitoring shops near schools and colleges. The public is urged to report illegal tobacco sales to the district control room at 94981-81212 or via WhatsApp at 77081-00100. Informants’ identities will remain confidential.
