Sun Apr 20 08:56:36 UTC 2025: ## Holy Fire Ceremony in Jerusalem Draws Thousands Despite Tensions

**JERUSALEM** – Thousands of Orthodox Christians converged on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem Saturday to witness the annual Holy Fire ceremony, a centuries-old tradition marking the miraculous appearance of a flame believed to originate from the site of Jesus’s tomb. Despite a heavy military presence and safety concerns stemming from past tragedies, including a deadly 1834 stampede, the ceremony proceeded with the Greek patriarch emerging from the Holy Edicule with lit candles, igniting the darkness of the basilica. The flame was subsequently transported to Orthodox communities worldwide.

While the Orthodox faith attributes the flame’s origin to a divine miracle, skepticism persists. This year’s ceremony, however, was overshadowed by lower-than-usual attendance, attributed by some to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the 18-month war in Gaza. Adeeb Joude, key holder for the Holy Sepulchre, noted a larger police presence than the number of pilgrims.

The event highlighted the complex political and religious dynamics in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israeli authorities, citing safety concerns, have implemented limitations on participant numbers in recent years, leading to protests from church leaders. These limitations, coupled with the ongoing conflict, have exacerbated existing tensions between Israeli authorities and the predominantly Palestinian Christian community, many of whom have emigrated due to decades of conflict. The incident underscores the delicate balance Israel attempts to maintain in ensuring freedom of worship for all faiths while managing the sensitive status quo at the city’s holy sites.
