Sun Apr 20 10:02:45 UTC 2025: ## Tirupati Zoo Implements Heatwave Relief Measures for Animals
**TIRUPATI, INDIA (April 20, 2025)** – As a severe heatwave grips the Rayalaseema region, the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park (SVZP) in Tirupati has implemented extensive measures to protect its animals from the scorching temperatures. Zoo officials, anticipating the harsh summer, began preparations back in February.
The zoo has employed a range of strategies, including installing fans and air coolers in animal shelters, covering windows with wet khus khus mats, and applying a reflective cool white paint to the roofs to minimize radiation. Pools in the enclosures are regularly filled, allowing animals to cool off. Carnivores like tigers and leopards are observed utilizing the pools for respite, while elephants enjoy splashing water. Sprinklers provide additional cooling for animals venturing outside. Birds, particularly vulnerable to dehydration, benefit from foggers installed in their aviaries.
Curator C. Selvam explained that the zoo maintains a comfortable room temperature between 28°C and 29°C and that these measures, expected to continue until June, are crucial for the well-being of the animals. Photos show leopards and tigers enjoying the cooling measures.
