**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, April 19, 2025** – Tamil Nadu’s transport sector is celebrating a wave of positive developments, highlighted by a recent award ceremony in New Delhi. The state won a remarkable 19 awards, representing 70% of the total accolades given for best-performing transport corporations nationwide.

Transport Minister S.S. Sivashankar announced the achievements during a ceremony in Madurai where he flagged off 32 new Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses, representing a ₹13.44 crore investment. He attributed the success to the concerted efforts of transport workers and the government’s focus on improving services. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also praised Tamil Nadu’s performance, urging other states to adopt similar strategies.

Sivashankar highlighted significant improvements in service during peak travel periods, including festivals. He also announced the upcoming launch of electric buses in Chennai in June, with Madurai to follow within two months. Furthermore, the government has reinstated compassionate appointments, providing 1,024 jobs since Chief Minister M.K. Stalin took office. This initiative was previously suspended.

The minister emphasized the department’s commitment to providing safe and reliable transport, especially for vulnerable groups like students, women, and the elderly. He also acknowledged the increasing demand for rural connectivity and stated that the government will explore options to expand services in Tier II cities.

Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy and Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services Palanivel Thiaga Rajan echoed the positive assessment, praising the department’s affordable services and their impact on improving livelihoods.

The event concluded with the distribution of 60 compassionate appointment orders. Collector M.S. Sangeetha, Mayor Indrani Ponvasanth, and Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan were among the attendees. The upgrades and expansion signify a major step forward for public transportation in Tamil Nadu.
