Thu Apr 17 05:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Coachella Apologizes for 12-Hour Traffic Jams, Promises Fixes for Weekend 2
**La Quinta, CA** – Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival organizers issued a public apology this week for the massive traffic delays that plagued Weekend 1, leaving some campers stranded in their cars for up to 12 hours. Goldenvoice, the festival’s producer, attributed the problems to a confluence of factors, including an unexpectedly high number of early arrivals spurred by a Thursday night campground performance by DJ Chris Lake, insufficient staffing at security checkpoints, and the resulting congestion on surrounding roads.
George Cunningham, Goldenvoice’s senior vice president of public safety, addressed the La Quinta City Council, acknowledging the severe traffic backups on Monroe and Madison streets. He explained that the usual Thursday afternoon lull in arrivals failed to materialize, leading to a backlog of 6,300 campers by 4:30 p.m., far exceeding typical numbers for that time. Further compounding the issue, staffing shortages resulted in the closure of six of the 32 toll booths used for vehicle security screenings.
To prevent a repeat of the chaos during Weekend 2 and the upcoming Stagecoach festival, Goldenvoice plans to implement several measures. This includes adding 12 more tollbooths at Lot 2A and proactively addressing staffing challenges. While Cunningham couldn’t guarantee a completely traffic-free experience, he assured the council that the impact would be significantly reduced.
La Quinta Councilmember Kathleen Fitzpatrick expressed strong disapproval, citing reports of human waste on streets due to the lack of accessible restrooms and water facilities for stranded attendees. She characterized the situation as “unacceptable” and an “embarrassment” to the city. While acknowledging the concerns, Cunningham reiterated Goldenvoice’s commitment to mitigating the festival’s impact on the surrounding community. The city council and festival organizers will review the implemented changes and make further adjustments as needed for the Stagecoach event.
