Thu Apr 17 06:43:36 UTC 2025: ## Police Investigate Possible Honour Killing in Chittoor

**Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, April 17, 2025** – Chittoor police are investigating the death of 26-year-old Shaik Yasmin Bhanu, who died under suspicious circumstances after marrying against her family’s wishes. While the family claims she committed suicide, police suspect foul play and are investigating the possibility of an honour killing.

Bhanu, a resident of Chittoor town, married Sai Teja of Putalapattu in February 2025. Their interfaith marriage prompted disapproval from Bhanu’s family, leading the couple to seek police protection just four days after their wedding. Despite police intervention and counselling, Bhanu’s family called her home under the pretense of a family emergency on April 12th.

The next day, Teja received news that Bhanu had been hospitalized and had allegedly died by suicide. Upon arriving at the hospital, he was informed by her family that she had taken her own life. Teja, however, alleges that his wife was murdered because of their marriage.

Police have registered a case of suspicious death and are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the cause of death. Bhanu’s mother is currently in police custody, while other family members are at large and are being sought for questioning. Police have seized the vehicle used to transport Bhanu’s body to the hospital and are pursuing all leads, including the possibility of an honour killing. The investigation is ongoing.
