Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – April 16, 2025 – A 16-member Aquaculture Advisory Committee (AAC) in Andhra Pradesh will submit a preliminary report tomorrow on the impact of a 26% US tariff on the state’s aquaculture industry. The committee, formed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on April 7th, has spent the last five days consulting with farmers, exporters, and other stakeholders.

The report will address challenges posed by the US tariff, imposed under President Donald Trump’s administration, as well as other issues affecting the sector. The AAC’s Vice-Chairman, Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy, stated that the committee utilized virtual conferences and in-person meetings to gather information. The report’s recommendations will focus on the sustainability of the aquaculture industry.

Among the issues discussed were rising feed prices, boosting domestic consumption through marketing campaigns highlighting the nutritional value of seafood, and exploring new export markets. One aqua farmer, A. Narasimha Rao, suggested government initiatives such as easing licensing for aquaculture ponds, extending power subsidies, and including seafood in meals served to defense personnel and educational institutions.

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is concurrently exploring new markets in China, the European Union, and other regions, and is also focusing on aquaculture diversification. The AAC’s report is expected to provide crucial insights for policymakers seeking to support the state’s vital aquaculture sector.
