Mon Apr 14 12:30:00 UTC 2025: ## California DMV Extends Hours to Ease Real ID Rush Before May Deadline
**SACRAMENTO, CA –** With the May 7th deadline for Real ID compliance looming, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is taking steps to alleviate the expected surge in applicants. Starting Monday, March 27th, 18 DMV offices will open an hour early—at 7 a.m.—on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays through June 27th, exclusively for Real ID appointments. This initiative aims to help Californians obtain the federally compliant identification required for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities.
The DMV also announced a new policy allowing Californians aged 70 and older with clean driving records to renew their licenses without needing an online course or test. Those already possessing a valid U.S. passport or other federally accepted identification may postpone their Real ID upgrade until their license renewal.
The Real ID Act, passed in 2005 following the 9/11 attacks, aims to enhance security and reduce fraud. Applicants can begin the process online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov, uploading necessary documents like a birth certificate, proof of residency, and Social Security number before visiting a DMV office to complete the application. The Real ID license costs $45.
Separately, the DMV issued an apology for a recently issued license plate containing the potentially offensive acronym “LOL,” referencing the October 7th attacks on Israel. A list of the 18 offices extending their hours is available on the DMV website.
