Bolsonaro, who was hospitalized Friday in Rio Grande do Norte state, was initially reported as stable. However, his condition prompted a transfer to a hospital in Brasília at his family’s request. While doctors in Rio Grande do Norte initially stated emergency surgery wasn’t necessary, Bolsonaro’s own social media post suggests a more serious prognosis. The transfer comes as Bolsonaro was preparing for a political trip across northeastern Brazil, a region traditionally supportive of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to promote his party’s agenda ahead of next year’s presidential election.
