**Hubballi, Karnataka, April 12, 2025** – KLE Technological University (KLE Tech) inaugurated a new Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) laboratory in Hubballi on Saturday. The facility, built at a cost of ₹24 crore, features advanced infrastructure, including a high-performance DGX system, putting it on par with leading Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in terms of research capabilities.
The inauguration was presided over by Manish R. Joshi, Secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Joshi emphasized the importance of responsible AI innovation, highlighting both the transformative potential and the ethical considerations surrounding the technology. He cited examples of everyday uses of AI, from a “Chai-GPT” tea stall to a teenager using Alexa to deter monkeys, illustrating the technology’s accessibility and creative applications. He also discussed emerging frontiers in AI, such as sensory learning models (SLMs).
Ashok Shettar, Pro-Chancellor of KLE Tech, stated that the CAIR lab will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research and real-world impact, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India as a global leader in responsible AI development, as expressed at a recent AI summit in France. Chancellor Prabhakar Kore highlighted the KLE Society’s growth from seven founding teachers a century ago to its current status as a network of over 310 educational and healthcare institutions. He emphasized the university’s commitment to practical, high-quality research.
The CAIR lab is part of the university’s seven planned STAR (Science and Technology Advanced Research) Labs initiative, aiming to create impactful, interdisciplinary research ecosystems on campus. The event was attended by several university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and Dean of Research and Development.
