**Sydney, April 12, 2025** – A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland province on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which occurred at a depth of 72 kilometers (44 miles), was located approximately 115 kilometers southeast of Kokopo.

While the earthquake lasted about a minute, according to Emonck Abelis, a receptionist at Kokopo Beach Bungalow Resort, no damage has been reported in the immediate area. Papua New Guinea’s location on the Ring of Fire, a zone of high seismic activity, makes earthquakes common. Although typically not causing widespread destruction in less populated regions, these events carry the risk of triggering landslides.
