The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast the light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, providing relief after several days of scorching temperatures.
The IMD reported heatwave conditions at Ridge (40.9°C) and Ayanagar (40.2°C) earlier in the day. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, recorded a high of 39.6°C, 4.5 degrees above normal, while Palam and Lodhi Road also saw temperatures around 39.6°C and 39.1°C respectively. Monday marked the start of the season’s first heatwave, with temperatures reaching 40°C.
Thursday’s minimum temperature reached 25.9°C, a significant six degrees above normal and the highest night-time temperature recorded in April for the past three years. The humidity fluctuated between 30% and 55% throughout the day.
The IMD forecasts further thunderstorms and rain for Friday, with the maximum temperature expected to drop to around 37°C and the minimum to 24°C. However, the air quality remains a concern, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 256 (“poor”) at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
