ALAPPUZHA, KERALA—April 11, 2025—A comprehensive report outlining a plan for the conservation of Vembanad Lake has been submitted to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The report, prepared by the Alappuzha district administration and presented by District Collector Alex Varghese, details recommendations from various expert committees formed to address the lake’s rejuvenation.

The plan encompasses a wide range of initiatives, including establishing bio-boundaries to protect endangered species, controlling invasive aquatic plants, and constructing sewage and faecal sludge treatment plants in the Kuttanad region. Sustainable agricultural practices, such as organic farming and integrated farming of paddy, fish, ducks, and vegetables, are also proposed. The report further suggests improving water quality through the Vadayar diversion project and creating a Vembanad Wetland Interpretation Centre. Flood protection measures are also included.

The report builds upon the work of eight sub-committees focusing on agriculture, biodiversity, sanitation, water resources, fishing, tourism, disaster mitigation, and revenue. Recent efforts have already seen the removal of 28.72 tonnes of plastic waste from the lake. The plan aims to address both short-term and long-term challenges facing the ecologically vital Vembanad Lake.
