**Madurai, April 10, 2025** – The First Additional Special Court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act Cases in Madurai has delivered significant sentences in two separate ganja smuggling cases. S. Ponnangan received a 12-year rigorous imprisonment sentence and a ₹1 lakh fine for possessing 75 kg of ganja in Dindigul district in 2017. His accomplice, R. Jayabass, remains at large. The Dindigul NIB-CID arrested Ponnangan while he was transporting the ganja.
In a separate case, M. Anbalagan and his son A. Pugal were each sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1 lakh for possessing 50 kg of ganja in Theni district. The Theni NIB-CID apprehended the duo in 2021 while they were smuggling ganja. This case initially involved six accused; two were previously convicted, and two acquitted, necessitating a split trial due to Anbalagan and Pugal initially being absconding.
