Thu Apr 10 16:44:16 UTC 2025: ## Maharashtra Clears 256 Acres for Dharavi Redevelopment, Sparking Debate

**Mumbai, April 10, 2025** – The Maharashtra government has approved the allocation of 256 acres of salt pan land in Mulund, Kanjurmarg, and Bhandup for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), aiming to relocate ineligible slum dwellers. The decision, while aligning with Mumbai’s Development Plan 2034, has ignited controversy.

DRP CEO S.V.R. Srinivas assured that the land, decommissioned over a decade ago, poses no environmental risk. He stated that the land is located west of the Eastern Express Highway, beyond ecologically sensitive areas, and that all necessary environmental clearances will be obtained before construction begins. This assertion counters concerns raised by critics and opposition leaders who question the apparent discrepancy between resistance to affordable housing projects on this land and the approval of infrastructure projects on similar land.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the move, emphasizing that utilizing such land is crucial for Mumbai’s redevelopment. He cited the allocation of 55 acres in Wadala for an excise department complex and 15 acres in Kanjur for a Metro Line 6 car shed as examples of similar land use.

Mr. Srinivas clarified that the land remains under state government ownership, with the project developer, NMDPL, only paying premiums. He framed the project as a “human transformation mission” focused on creating a slum-free Mumbai. Construction will commence only after securing all required environmental approvals and regulatory compliance. The project’s progress will be closely watched given the ongoing debate about its environmental impact and social equity implications.
