**Mangaluru, April 10, 2025** – A significant upgrade is coming to the Surathkal-B.C. Road port connectivity road in Mangaluru. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta announced Thursday that a ₹26 crore grant has been secured from Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari for improvement works.
The New Mangalore Port Road Company Ltd. (NMRCL) has selected a local contractor to undertake the project, with completion expected before the monsoon season. The work will include relaying 12 stretches of the Kochi-Panvel National Highway 66 between Nanthoor and Surathkal, constructing a drain in Thumbe, and landscaping work.
Capt. Chowta stated that improving roads leading to the New Mangalore Port is a top priority, crucial for regional development. He also revealed ongoing efforts to secure funding for additional road and rail infrastructure projects in the region, including a possible road-cum-rail route in the Shiradi Ghat stretch of NH 75, in collaboration with the Indian Railways. Further road expansions are also planned, connecting Ujire to Periyashanti and potentially extending to Bajagoli.
The MP also highlighted efforts to secure over ₹1,000 crore for land acquisition to expand the Mangaluru International Airport runway, anticipating Union Cabinet approval within two months. Finally, Capt. Chowta mentioned advocating for the merger of the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. with Indian Railways in the recent Lok Sabha budget session.
