**Imphal, Manipur –** Violent protests have erupted in Manipur following the passage of the Waqf Amendment Act, leading to increased security measures and the imposition of prohibitory orders in several areas.
On April 6th, 2025, a large mob attacked and burned the home of Asker Ali, president of the BJP Minority Morcha in Manipur, after he publicly supported the Act. Approximately 7,000-8,000 people participated in the attack, according to police reports. Ali later retracted his support and condemned the Act. The incident prompted the district administration to impose Section 163 of BNSS in the Lilong assembly constituency, prohibiting gatherings of five or more people and the carrying of weapons.
Further protests, including a large rally disrupting traffic on National Highway-102 and scuffles with security forces, occurred across Imphal Valley on April 6th. Security forces, equipped with anti-riot gear, have been deployed in the Muslim-dominated Lilong area and other parts of Thoubal and Imphal East districts in anticipation of further demonstrations, including a planned human chain protest on April 8th. Increased security measures have also been put in place around the residence of local MLA Abdul Nasir.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, passed by both houses of Parliament and assented to by President Droupadi Murmu on April 5th, aims to improve the management of Waqf properties, enhance transparency, and protect heritage sites. However, the Act’s implementation has sparked widespread unrest and violence in Manipur.
