**Jaipur, Rajasthan –** A severe heatwave is gripping Rajasthan, with Barmer and Jaisalmer bearing the brunt of the scorching temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Jaipur has issued a heatwave alert for 14 districts, warning that the intense heat will continue for the next few days.
Barmer recorded a staggering 45.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the highest temperature recorded in the state in the first week of April since 1998. This is a significant 6.8 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. The night-time temperature in Barmer also remained unusually high at 28.8 degrees Celsius, 6.4 degrees above average. Jaisalmer closely followed with a maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius.
A total of 21 cities across Rajasthan recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, including Jaipur (40.7°C), Ajmer (40.8°C), and Kota (42.4°C). The extreme heat has led to reduced public movement, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
The IMD predicts the heatwave will continue until April 9th in several divisions, including Kota, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Bikaner. However, a westerly disturbance is expected to bring some relief with sporadic rainfall from April 11th to 13th.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions against heatstroke, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and seeking medical attention if symptoms arise. Vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are advised to take extra care.
