**Khan Younis, Gaza –** An Israeli air strike on a media tent outside Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, early Monday morning killed at least two journalists and injured several others, further escalating the already devastating toll on media workers in the ongoing conflict. The attack, which set the tent ablaze, claimed the lives of Helmi al-Faqawi and Yousef al-Khazindar, according to Palestine’s Wafa news agency. Footage from the scene showed the burning tent and injured journalists being transported to hospitals. At least six of the nine reported injuries were sustained by journalists, some described as “serious.”
This latest incident adds to the grim statistics highlighting the conflict as the deadliest ever for media personnel. The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs reports that Israeli forces have killed 232 journalists and media workers since the war began on October 7, 2023, exceeding the combined losses of all previous major conflicts. This averages to 13 media workers killed weekly. The Institute’s report, released last week, notes the difficulty in determining how many journalists were specifically targeted versus being collateral damage, but cites Reporters Without Borders (RSF) documentation of at least 35 cases of likely deliberate targeting.
Monday’s attacks also resulted in at least 13 civilian deaths across various locations in Gaza, according to Al Jazeera. The death of journalist Islam Meqdad and her family on Sunday further underscores the immense human cost of the conflict.
Journalist Antony Lowenstein, citing the Costs of War study, accused Israel of “deliberate targeting of journalists,” emphasizing the unprecedented scale of media worker deaths in Gaza. International concern is mounting over the escalating violence and the targeting of journalists covering the conflict. The incident has sparked renewed outrage and calls for accountability for the attacks on the press.
