**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – A Dhaka court on Sunday sent 70 lawyers to Dhaka Central Jail on charges of assault and attempted murder. The lawyers, known for their support of the Awami League party, were implicated in last year’s mass uprising that led to the overthrow of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
The Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Zakir Hossain denied bail for the 70, despite their pleas. However, nine female lawyers and the Dhaka Bar’s former president, Abu Sayeed Sagor, were granted bail. The lawyers had previously secured anticipatory bail for eight weeks before surrendering to the lower court.
A total of 144 lawyers face charges related to the protests and subsequent retaliatory attacks, which resulted in 1,400 deaths. The events stemmed from the large-scale political unrest of the previous year. Following the court’s decision, the 70 lawyers were immediately taken into custody.
