Sat Apr 05 07:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Measles Outbreak Explodes Across US, Surpassing 2024 Totals
**Austin, TX –** A massive measles outbreak sweeping across the United States has already surpassed the total number of cases seen in all of 2024, health officials announced Friday. Texas, the epicenter of the crisis, reported another 59 cases and 14 hospitalizations, bringing the state’s total to 481 cases and 56 hospitalizations. This represents more than double the nationwide 2024 total.
The highly contagious virus is spreading rapidly through undervaccinated communities, with two unvaccinated individuals succumbing to measles-related complications since February. The outbreak extends beyond Texas, impacting New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio, and Oklahoma, with active outbreaks defined as three or more cases. The World Health Organization has even linked cases in Mexico to the Texas outbreak.
The majority of Texas cases (over 65%) are concentrated in Gaines County, a close-knit Mennonite community with low vaccination rates. This county, with a population of only 22,892, has already seen 315 cases – over 1% of its residents.
Health experts warn that the outbreak, which began over two months ago, could continue for a year, impacting other communities with low vaccination rates. Measles, a preventable disease through vaccination, was declared eliminated from the US in 2000. The current surge underscores the importance of vaccination in preventing the resurgence of this highly contagious and potentially deadly illness.
