Sat Apr 05 05:55:01 UTC 2025: ## Cambodian Hero Rat Ronin Breaks World Record for Landmine Detection

**Phnom Penh, Cambodia –** A giant African pouched rat named Ronin has officially been declared the world’s most successful landmine detector, surpassing the previous record held by the late Magawa. Ronin, working in northern Preah Vihear province since August 2021, has located 109 landmines and 15 other unexploded ordnance items, according to the Belgian charity APOPO. This remarkable achievement has earned him a Guinness World Record.

Ronin’s accomplishment significantly exceeds the previous record set by Magawa, who detected 71 landmines and 38 unexploded ordnance items during his five-year career. Magawa, who received a gold medal for his service, sadly passed away in 2022.

APOPO, which trains these “HeroRats” for mine detection, says Ronin, at the age of five, may have two more years of productive service ahead of him. His handler, Phanny, described Ronin as “a valued partner and colleague.”

Cambodia continues to grapple with the devastating legacy of decades of war, with landmines and unexploded ordnance posing a significant threat. While the country aimed for a mine-free status by 2025, this goal has been postponed to 2030 due to funding limitations and the discovery of new minefields. The ongoing danger is tragically illustrated by the deaths of two toddlers in February who were killed by an exploding rocket-propelled grenade. Since 1979, an estimated 20,000 people have died from landmines and unexploded ordnance, with twice that number injured. Ronin’s work represents a vital contribution to ongoing demining efforts in the country.
