**New Orleans, LA** – The New Orleans Pelicans have signed veteran point guard Elfrid Payton to a second 10-day contract, the team announced today. The 31-year-old guard impressed the team during his first 10-day stint, averaging strong assist numbers in his last three appearances. His previous contract expired on Sunday.

Payton, who played a bench role for the Pelicans, showcased his playmaking ability, recording 14, 10, and 6 assists in his final three games. This season, across 17 games with New Orleans and Charlotte, he averages 3.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in 20.4 minutes per game. His previous NBA stints this season included a non-guaranteed contract with the Pelicans (November-December) and two 10-day contracts with the Charlotte Hornets in February.

This second 10-day contract will pay Payton $171,756, the same amount as his previous short-term deal. The Pelicans’ cap charge will be $119,972. The team’s roster is now full at 15 players.

Payton’s contract may not be finalized until Wednesday, when the Pelicans play again. If signed before the April 11 expiration date, he would be eligible to play in six games before it expires. To keep him beyond April 13, the Pelicans would need to sign him to a standard contract.
