**Washington, D.C.** – The IRS is urging over one million eligible Americans to claim their unclaimed $1,400 stimulus payments from the 2021 American Rescue Plan before the April 15, 2025 deadline. Many missed out due to unawareness of the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC), low income exempting them from filing, or filing errors.
The agency is contacting these individuals directly, but those who didn’t file a 2021 tax return are encouraged to do so immediately. Eligibility requires a valid Social Security number in 2021, not being claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return, and not having received the full $1,400 payment. Importantly, even those with little or no income in 2021 may still qualify.
Filing a 2021 tax return, even if not normally required, is the only way to claim the missed payment. The IRS offers free filing options on its website and assistance through Taxpayer Assistance Centers for those needing help. Claiming the RRC could also unlock additional pandemic-era benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
The IRS is stressing the urgency of the situation, highlighting that missing the April 15th deadline will result in the forfeiture of the payment. Taxpayers can submit their returns online or by mail.
