**Chennai, April 5, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government announced today that 621 life convicts have been prematurely released from prison since 2021. This follows a 2021 Chief Minister’s announcement to release life convicts on humanitarian grounds. The release was based on guidelines stipulating completion of 10 or 14 years of imprisonment, depending on the date. An additional 31 life convicts were released under a separate Advisory Board scheme. The government further stated that new Standard Operating Procedures, based on the 2024 Tamil Nadu Prison Rules, are now in place for future premature releases, overseen by a State-Level Committee.
