Fri Apr 04 07:40:25 UTC 2025: ## Congress Protests US Reciprocal Tariffs, Demands Parliamentary Response

**New Delhi, April 4, 2025** – Congress MPs staged a protest in the Parliament House complex today against the US imposition of reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods. The demonstration followed the adjournment of the Lok Sabha until noon, after the treasury benches protested Sonia Gandhi’s recent criticism of the government.

The protest, joined by opposition MPs from parties like the Shiv Sena (UBT), involved a march and slogans against both the Modi government and the US administration’s decision. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi warned that the 27% tariffs – recently revised down slightly from an initial 27% to 26% – threaten to severely damage key sectors of the Indian economy, including automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

The US justified its action by citing high Indian import duties on American products, claiming the move is intended to reduce the US trade deficit and stimulate domestic manufacturing. While the tariffs are expected to negatively impact Indian exports to the US, analysts suggest India is better positioned to withstand the effects than some competitors. The US has implemented similar reciprocal tariffs on approximately 60 countries. The Congress is demanding a parliamentary response from the government addressing the impact of these tariffs on India’s economy.
