**New Delhi** – The Rajya Sabha today approved a resolution formally extending President’s Rule to Manipur, following months of escalating ethnic violence. While the decision garnered support across party lines, opposition members heavily criticized the central government’s handling of the crisis.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking after a heated debate, expressed hope for a swift resolution to the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities. He revealed that two community meetings have already been held in Manipur, with a third planned in New Delhi shortly. The minister assured the House that the government is actively working to restore normalcy, though he acknowledged the tragic loss of 260 lives. He stated that the majority of these deaths occurred in the initial week of the violence.
While emphasizing ongoing peace talks with both communities, Shah rebuked the opposition for allegedly politicizing the situation. He further claimed that similar incidents occurred during previous Congress governments, noting that no Prime Minister visited the state at the time. The opposition, however, maintained its criticism of the Centre’s response, arguing that the situation necessitates stronger action and a more comprehensive approach to restoring peace and stability in Manipur.
