**PALM BEACH, FL** – The Las Vegas Raiders have acquired veteran quarterback Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade for a 2025 third-round pick, and are reportedly on the verge of signing him to a long-term contract. Raiders general manager John Spytek expressed confidence Monday at the annual league meeting that a deal will be finalized soon, stating, “We really look forward to having him not just this year, but for the years to come.”
The trade comes after the Seahawks attempted to extend Smith, who still has one year remaining on his current contract with a value of $31 million. Seattle reportedly offered a two-year, $40 million extension, but negotiations stalled. Seahawks GM John Schneider confirmed they explored extending Smith before ultimately trading him.
The Raiders’ move was expedited by familiarity. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who coached Smith in Seattle for several seasons, praised Smith’s experience and ability, stating the trade happened “automatically” due to their existing relationship. Carroll emphasized Smith’s resilience and lack of significant wear and tear from years spent as a backup, believing the 34-year-old Smith can provide stability for several more years.
Carroll called Smith an “immediate fix” for the Raiders’ quarterback situation, which saw six different players start at the position last season. Despite acquiring Smith, the Raiders haven’t ruled out drafting a quarterback, with both Spytek and Carroll indicating they will explore all options to improve the team. However, the acquisition of Smith has significantly eased concerns at the quarterback position. Spytek stated, “The need and anxiety at that position is not as high as it was a month ago.”
