**Hyderabad, India –** Actor John Abraham has added his voice to the growing protests against the alleged felling of trees on 400 acres of land near Hyderabad Central University (HCU). Abraham urged Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to halt the project, citing the area’s importance as a vital green space and habitat for numerous wildlife species.
The controversy surrounding the deforestation in Kancha Gachibowli escalated Friday, with the Supreme Court taking note of an alarming interim report from the Telangana High Court detailing significant tree felling. The court questioned the Telangana government’s lack of an environmental impact assessment certificate and the urgency of the project, issuing an order halting all activity on the land. A similar injunction was previously issued by the Telangana High Court.
Protests, initiated by HCU students and the Vata Foundation, led to the legal action. The petitioners argue the land should be declared a national park due to its rich biodiversity. While the Telangana government maintains it hasn’t encroached on HCU land and intends to protect the campus’ biodiversity, it plans to use the land to develop IT infrastructure and create employment opportunities. The government’s clarification, however, hasn’t quelled concerns raised by environmental activists and celebrities like John Abraham. The situation remains tense as the legal battle continues.
